Men in Australia will soon be able to buy Viagra over the counter for the first time after the erectile dysfunction drug was reclassified.
Those aged 18 and older will soon be able to buy the medication without a prescription after the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) gave clear instructions that new regulations would be published on 2027. Under the new regime, anyone aged 18 and older can buy the drug without a prescription from pharmacies in Australia, following a consultation.
“The TGA has further amended the law to allow pharmacists to sell Viagra over the counter without a prescription,” a TGA spokesperson said.
“Prescriptions should only be made on the consultation questionnaire, and not in person.”
Those who buy Viagra without a prescription will be able to get the medication in a private prescription from a pharmacist, the spokesperson said.
“Any person who buy Viagra without a prescription from a pharmacist is breaking the TGA’s strict regulations,” the spokesperson said.
“The new regime applies to all health professionals and is designed to ensure the health of all patients, including those who are buying Viagra.
“We hope this change will encourage more Australians to seek help for erectile dysfunction and will also help to lower the cost of prescription drugs for other conditions.
“This move is a significant step in saving Australians time and energy, as well as money, from having to consult a doctor.”
A TGA spokeswoman said the move “remains an important step in addressing erectile dysfunction” in Australia.
“We will continue to monitor any changes to the law and ensure they are implemented as needed, with the continued advocacy for effective treatment,” she said.
“As with all medical treatments, including prescription drugs, TGA guidance will take account of individual circumstances and medical history to ensure Viagra can be safely used.
“We encourage Australians to seek medical advice before taking Viagra and will continue to monitor their treatment choices,” the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said: “TGA is aware of the changes and has taken appropriate steps to ensure Australians have access to Viagra.”
The TGA has also taken the first step in addressing erectile dysfunction, with the Government Health Minister Bill simpleing up his own health professionals as soon as he can to help ensure people can get the medication.

The first of Australia’s prescription drugs to be reclassified in 2022, following a consultation with TGA Australia, will now be available without a prescription on prescription from pharmacies.
A TGA spokesperson said the change was an important step in addressing erectile dysfunction in Australia, with the medication reclassified after consultation.
“The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has reclassified the drugs into the new regime following a consultation with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and has taken the first steps in addressing erectile dysfunction,” the spokesperson said.
“The new approach will provide men and their doctors with the first opportunity to discuss their concerns with their pharmacy.
“TGA has also reclassified the drugs to the TGA’s restricted regime of prescribing from without restriction.”
